For one of my personal projects, I decided to use concept art by a professional artist and create it in 3D as from talking to people and recruiters from within industry, they said that this was something that they were looking for as this is what the actual job would be. For example, after a 1 on 1 talk with Grace Culverwell from Bluezoo, she advised that I should create a few of my own stylised props but also make sure that I have props and perhaps an environment based on various different concept artists with slightly different styles to show that I would fit in well within that company.
I found doing this more difficult than I originally expected because having only one view, whether this is just a side view, or 3 quarter view, it is difficult because the perspective always meant that some aspects of the model would have to be changed in order to still fit in with the concept art itself.
I like this concept art by Michael Verdu as it shows a lot of potential for the texturing element as there is also a lot of emission maps that will be added to give it personality and to make sure it is as close to the concept art as possible.
Finally, a very important aspect of doing this is to communicate with the original concept artist if possible and ask for permission to create the 3D version. This could potentially lead to gaining more recognition from them.
