FMX 2019

Updated: May 1, 2019

As part of my university course, I have had the option to go to FMX in both my second and third years and I have taken up this opportunity both times.

FMX is known for being a conference/event where there are talks from people within the VFX, Animation, Video Game, Motion Graphics and Commercial Industries to show them what they have been working on and it is also a way for the companies that hold talks to promote themselves and to help improve their company by showing what they do and what they have the potential to do.

For example, the second day of FMX for both this year and last year was the recruitment day so therefore, this meant that students and other people were able to go and talk to these people and ask for feedback on their showreels or to ask for more information on that specific company and to find out if and how they should apply, should they want to.

I asked for feedback from a few of the VFX companies but also some of the feature animation companies, such as Animal Logic and BlueZoo. Bluezoo is the main company that I was very interested in seeing due to the style and quality of the work that they do.

The feedback I got from Bluezoo especially was very useful and gave me ideas on what to change with my showreel for future applications.

Bluezoo are a company based in London that work primarily in childrens TV shows and they work in feature animation. I am interested in Bluezoo because the art style and the quality of work is extremely high and I feel that my stylised work is quite similar in terms of the painting style.

As well as Bluezoo, I am very interested in the VFX companies due to the realism and the process of which the work is made. Throughout my 3rd year, a lot of the work I have been creating has had VFX in mind, in terms of lighting, compositing, modelling and texturing. To make sure that I am more employable in the VFX industry for once I graduate in a few months time, I have been making sure that I have at least some basic knowledge for the software that is used within the VFX pipeline.

For example. Houdini, kitbashing and groom have been the 3 main areas that I have looked into, even though Houdini and Groom are their own specialisms, I wanted to know what the process would be like as if I did get a job within this industry, it would be very helpful in learning about what happens before and after my role within the pipeline for that project.
